In Les Landes, the ground was marshy and filled with gorse. So shepherds used stilts to get around without their clothes getting muddy, or torn. They could also keep a watchful eye on their herds from a higher viewpoint. The rugby player is wearing the colours of Mont de Marsan, the prefecture of the department.
When the moon is right and the rain allows, the roads and fields are filled with tractors.
